CONTEXT

smallprojects conceptualises, designs and builds things. Primarily architecture, though there are many side orders to its concerns.

smallprojects engages relevant design, architectural economy and spatial technology as related to specific context. At principle inception, smallprojects began with singular directive: the design and architecture of garden houses were its focus. In application over time, its engagement was plural: planning, landsc-apes, project identity, building and product design, and the domain which sits between it all as relation-ships, became its concerns and passions. With each work undertaken, big or small, it is less interested in what makes things different and more concerned with what all things share. smallprojects refers less to the sizes of things than to the intimate and profound relationships that bind them.

It is characterised by an entirely uncorporate identity, ironically grown from eleven years of corporate history. It is less concerned about the theatrical than it is about the dramatic. It has more to do with possibility than it does with statement.

smallprojects is about the possibility of context….. and subverting the dominant paradigm.

More than a decade has passed since this website was last updated in 2014. In those years. time has been put to the diverse activities of writing, lectures, teaching and extreme travel, aside from the everyday rigors and trials of the profession we call design.

What has consolidated in the intervening period has been the profound thought that critique, rather than its counterpoint of celebration, is what forms the foundations of all intellectual integrity and creative development; the very thing missing today in all fields of academic study and research, and in the archiectural field. The section on writing addresses this ten year incubation and discovery with deeper focus and detail.

Aside from all the traditional purposes a website might serve, it functions, at a higher level of obser-vation, as a record of its author’s sensibilities. A commercial business will read as one, in much the same way passion will be read as such. While this certainly allows viewers connection and access for more focussed market presence and profitability, this particular aspect of a website offers something else more profoundly unique – it underscores the nuance of identity while serving as guide for how true to vision one walks – while the previous smallprojects website was a nightmare of navigation, legibility, and served the sole need for portfolio, this site is both inceptor and keeper of narrative, and the attempt to finally get it right.
