corporate headquarters for the britishindia clothing company.
The b.i.t.c. corporate warehouse was commissioned with the requirements of housing all its needs under a single roof, from warehousing to corporate and design departments. The project became a task of assembling vaguely disparate functions and acivities within a simple huge rectangular shell.
The solution employed full clay brick walls for their insulative value with bolted steel trusses for long spans and the effect of a tough industrial environment. Windows were kept tall and narrow in the warehouse areas for the romance of shaft daylighting and wide only on the upper office level where they are shaded by the deep roof overhang.
Raw brick skirtings, chipped finished concrete, exposed brass and copper tapware and colossal order downpipe colonnades all made for an aesthetic of the industrial romantic.
