two storey bungalow - ongoing.

The client for the boardformed house had a healthy budget and had originally asked for a ‘japanese’ house, not quite aware that what he had really been thinking of was something which could have come out of Tadao Ando's portfolio.

So he was given something different.

The usual attention given to forming reinforced concrete walls was limited to just two, intended to be hidden in time with vines to render them unjapanese. Instead, energy was poured into the finish of strip formed ceilings, the forms of which were constructed of delicately grooved plywood which ran throughout the entire house for greater perceived space flow. The budget also allowed for huge glass doors and a concrete version of the safari roof to allow for seven foot cantilevers to a two inch thick roof edge.

The boardformed house was an exercise in construction effect and the ‘unseen’ detail required of that finesse.
