threshold house

row house renovation.

With its intermediate siting in
a row of late post-war terrace
houses, the narrative for the
threshold house began in
response to the comparatively
restricted dimensions for the
lot it sat in. Measuring twenty
feet wide and forty feet deep,
it was decided that the design
for the house would gravitate
around every junction serving
to distinguish adjacent spaces:
an exercise in the refinement
of thresholds, so to speak.

The threshold house takes its
name from the attention put
to the design of each interface
within the space of the house,
a fine-tuning of the elements
that create enclosure, suggest
division, modulate entry, and
delineate place: from scale of
neighbourhood street, culverts
and backlane cabling, down
to bathrooms and latch-pulls.
