fire stairfence
galvanised steel, chain-link fencing.
The firestair fence was designed
to address the issues that most
secondary stairs face: insecure or
inelegant mounting of the stair
rail to the body of the stair, and
the obtuse need for the typical
compensating riser and tread
for smooth flow of the handrail.
Drawing conventions considered,
the single line typically separating
opposing stair flights became a
gap instead, allowing the railing
of a single plane uninterrupted
travel through the twenty storeys
of the stairwell. The railing was
fabricated from chain-link fence
tensioned between galvanised
poles, securely bolted to the face
of corresponding landing edges
down the height of the building.
Acting as a trampoline between
stair flights. the railing gives a
comfortable bounce were one to
fall against it, accounting for
big, medium and little people.
