mild steel and expanded steel mesh.
In 2006, the Sibu Municipality
approached Seksan Design for
their entry of a public toilet at
the annual Malaysian Garden
Festival. The pavilion design
was recommissioned to small-
projects, and they got the first
global toilet by way of a bush.
One end became a plinth for a
sofa and armchairs, with a tea
room on the other. Sandwiched
between them was the ‘bush’, a
dense grove of trees hiding the
contents of its narrow maze and
toilet at the heart of the grove.
However, the pavilion’s deeper
narrative sat at its entrance in
a steel mesh wall marking the
main entry - with leaves and
detritus for fill, it formalised a
trash can of organic waste and
composting, and a template of
utility, convenience and grace
for a park toilet facility.
