cantilevered gate

mild steel and expanded mesh

The cantilevered gate was designed
beneath the shade of a concrete
roof in solution to an specific
requirement.: it had to slide in
front of the face of a brick wall
without any noticeable top guide
when opened or closed, in order to
leave the concrete roof soffit and
the backing brick wall untouched:
it had to make the manner of its
support and daily operation subtle.

The gate was cantilevered off two
wheels running on a single track
set into concrete on the driveway
threshold. Above, it utilised twin
tracks, one fixed along the top
length of the gate and the other to
the web of an I-beam supporting
the garage roof slab: opposing
runner arms, each welded to
opposing top edges of the sliding
gate and the I-beam support,
attach to their related tracks by
means of bearing wheels, ensuring
stability as they draw further
apart when the gate is being closed.
