small projects
folded stair
mild steel.
The stair for the aviary house was
fashioned in a straight run along
one side of the terrace party wall
to maximise room width. Garage
in place at a lower basement level
would have resulted in a walk up
at the end of each day a touch
short of welcoming. To bring light
down to the lower stair entry, the
upper flight had to be somewhat
transparent to natural daylight
allowed in from a skylight up top.
An added task was created in the
stair having to be suspended in
the space of its bounding walls,
given the discrepancy of two and
half inches in the separation of
the walls from top to bottom.
The design found perforated steel
sheets cut to width and folded to
treads and risers for the provision
of structural integrity, then hung
off the stair walls on mild steel
pins - solidité sans stéroïdes.
