archiebunker chair

The archiebunker chair was an
entry submitted for the first lawn
furniture competition at Harvard
University in the Fall of 1991.

Designed and built in the frenzy
of a single night, the chair was
originally conceived as a bean
bag of wire mesh and compacted
autumn maple leaves gathered
in sackloads from the streets of
Cambridge. With the discovery that
the fill of leaves would not plump
and give the bean bag form, the
time-worn craft of upholstery
was put to the chicken wire, fall
leaves and a discarded armchair
frame, The chair was cited as
having been imbued with textural
qualities mindful of autumn and
deep symbolic regard for the cycles
of nature, aside from being the
most comfortable of the entries.

It won first prize.
